Club Feature: KIWIN’S Club
Cam High is home to many clubs on campus, including the KIWIN’S Club. KIWIN’S main goal is to give back to the community and provide connections for Cam High students. First becoming an official club at Cam High in the 2012-2013 school year, it is still running to this day.
The word KIWIN’S comes from a Native American language, translating to “people, men, and women working together in service.” Club leader Jessica Lao, Cam High Senior, explained the two main goals of the club. “Our two main goals are simple: Provide service events for our students to give back to our community, and bonding!” With a full classroom of students coming to each meeting, Lao says, “When you join KIWIN’S, you are joining what we like to call Ohana, which means family!”
To officially join the KIWIN’S Club, students have to pay a fee of $14 to be registered to the CNH KIWIN’S District, so that any community service hours done through the club can be officially recorded. By paying, students are also eligible to earn a scholarship through KIWIN’S! The club is working on trying to get the fee down to $10 so it is slightly more affordable.
As a way to get club members to know each other better, KIWIN’S holds socials for members to go to, such as a Bowling Fundraiser, which happened mid-September. Alyssa Yoon, Cam High Junior and another leader of KIWIN’S attended it, and when asked about how it went, she answered, “The bowling alley was a huge success! It was really cool seeing so many people want to support a KIWIN’S event, even though it was a really busy week.”
As well as socials, there are also community service events that KIWIN’S organizes or participates in. One event coming up is that KIWIN’S will be volunteering at the Greek Festival at Camarillo Freedom Park from October 22-24, and a “Coloring for Pediatric Patients” social and service event.
