Cam High Athletics Brought To A Halt Due To Rise In COVID-19 Cases

Athletes at Cam High who were preparing to return to sports were recently told that due to Ventura County going back into the purple tier, their seasons could possibly not continue.

The players have all felt very deeply troubled about not getting to play this season, but feel that there still might be a chance that season might go on. Shawn Mills, freshmen and baseball player at Cam High, said, “I was very much looking forward to the season but I am unsure whether or not it will happen since there was a big rise in Covid-19 numbers in California.” These athletes have been working for months, aiming to get in good practice and the adequate conditioning to prepare for this season. They have waited months to start practicing and waited since the beginning of summer to play.

Trevor Barton, freshmen and basketball player at Cam High, said, “I am very excited to play since it is my freshmen year and has been looking forward to it for a very long time.” There is a slimmer chance of a full season happening, although the possibility of it occurring may be looking better since the release of the vaccines.

Cam High’s football coach, Jack Willard, said, “At this point, our season has not been postponed. We are still practicing and hope to play this season.” Willard said they are still hopeful this season is going to continue, and they will be able to play games when it is time to do so. COVID-19 has halted their season, but as of now, it has not ended it.

COVID-19 has not only affected the players at Cam High, but has affected players around the globe with seasons being postponed, and in some cases, being completely cancelled. The cases in California and around the United States have shown very big spikes in COVID-19 numbers, with at least 2.5 million affected with the disease at the moment. This has caused the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, to put us back into the purple tier, closing many public areas and events once again–one of which being Cam High’s athletics.
