Cam High’s marching band started their competition season on Aug. 12, winning first place in various competitions within the first few months.
On Oct. 12, the band competed in the Palmdale area against other high school bands, ranking first in their division and second overall. Their score improved by two-thirds since last year’s competition season. The band also won sweepstakes in the category of music. “This run was something I was proud of, especially after a week of abnormal rehearsals [prior to the performance],” said co-band director Mr. Daniel Cook.
Competing bands are split up into divisions based on the size of the band itself and were the highest-scoring band of their size. Cam High’s band is competing in the 4A division this year.
The marching band had a competition in Anaheim on Oct. 19 at Glover Stadium. Cam High’s marching band took first place in the 4A division again with a final score of 72.8. Cam High’s color guard, who competes alongside the band, achieved a score of 68.5 and took fifth place out of 14 groups. Cam High’s percussion placed third out of 14 teams with a score of 74.0.
At both shows, Cam High’s marching band performed their show entitled ‘These Fleeting Moments’ which includes selections from Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. Their newest movement will contain music by Chris They, who was a mandolin player for projects such as Ratatouille and Nickle Creek.
When asked how these victories affected the members of the band, co-band director Mr. Cameron Guerrero said, “All of the members were really excited, especially with that high music award, which I don’t think we’ve ever won before.” According to Guerrero, this victory has improved the band’s morale and further strengthened the bond between members.
Cam High’s last performance was on Nov. 10, and the band celebrated with an “Age Out” ceremony where the seniors stepped out and the remainder of the band performs the show one final time.
The band will begin practicing for the Camarillo Christmas Parade to take place during second semester.
