Cam High’s Scorpions varsity baseball team have made the leap into the 2014 Division-2 CIF Southern Section Baseball Tournament.
Cam High’s varsity baseball team has pushed itself toward a number of wins this season. Out of twenty-five games so far in 2014, the Scorpions have bested Channel Islands (twice), Crespi, Dos Pueblos, Granada Hills, Hueneme (three times), La Canada, Lancaster, Oxnard, Pacifica (three times), Rio Mesa (three times), Valencia, and Ventura High Schools.
In their first round of the Southern Section Baseball Tournament on May 22, the varsity team won the home-game versus Ayala with five runs over their opponent’s three. CIF tournaments are played on a “win or go home” principle.
The Scorps will fight another home-match against Aliso Niguel on Tuesday, May 27.
Under the leadership of Coach John Gonzalez, the Scorpions topped all rivals with the highest win to loss ratio in the Pacific View Baseball League. 13 wins against two losses, according to MaxPreps.com’s official statistics.
Gonzalez, who was already an assistant coach for seven years before taking the reigns from former Head Coach Richard Jacquez in 2012, said, “It’s been a tough season. We fought hard and we’re moving forward.”
“We knew what we had to do and did it. All our practice and mental preparation led up to everything,” said Andy Morales, senior, who’ll be moving on to play for Oxnard College next year. “It was a big season at ACHS.”
The team’s success was won by going through several learning experiences over the 2014 season, eight losses at the hands of Agoura, Channel Islands, Oxnard (twice), Rio Mesa, William Howard Taft Charter, Valencia, and Westlake High Schools.
“We’ve had a lot contributions from a lot of guys,” said Gonzalez when asked about which players could be considered as leading causes of the year’s victories.
Brandon Aoki, senior, said, “It’s been a great team. We’re all like brothers. It’s like one big family.”
